Learning about global Christianity
Learning about global Christianity helps us understand how millions of people around the world live, believe, and celebrate their faith. Christianity isn’t the same everywhere: different cultures express it in unique ways through music, traditions, festivals, and community life.
Studying these differences teaches us to appreciate diversity rather than fear it. It helps us see that faith can unite people across languages, countries, and backgrounds. It also encourages respect, empathy, and curiosity about how others experience the world.
By learning about global Christianity, we become more aware of global issues, more connected to people beyond our own community, and more open to building a world shaped by understanding and compassion.
In December 2025, the pupils took part in a series of workshops learning about the traditions of Christmas around the world.
Iceland
Here the children learnt that the most important part of the Christmas celebrations is Christmas Eve which focuses on the birth of Jesus Christ. In Iceland, families get ready for Christmas Eve by lighting candles, decorating the home and waiting for darkness to fall. The children listen to the story of Mary and Joseph and then give presents to each other in the form of a book. It is called the Christmas Book Flood and children cuddle up with hot chocolate and read their new books together.
Germany
The children learnt about the importance of Saint Nicholas and how they leave their shoes outside on the 5th of December to await a delicious treat from Saint Nicholas himself. We had some fantastic renditions of silent night in German!
France
The pupils learnt that the French people celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve but Boxing Day is not a holiday! They developed their French vocabulary and learned about the importance of decorations.
Mexico
The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed a series of Christmas workshops today learning about Christmas traditions around the world. First stop was Mexico where the pupils learnt about the special festival of Los Posadas where the Mexican people walk together in the evenings and sing songs to represent the walk taken by Mary and Joseph. They all made their own lanterns to light the way.
