Eco Committee

Wincle School is surrounded by beautiful countryside and we want to help to care for the world around us. Our Eco Committee help us to think about our actions, creating posters and leading assemblies to remind us to switch off appliances, recycle or care for the local wildlife.
Meet the new Chair and Vice Chair for this academic year.

Miss Kershaw explained that we have looked a lot at how we can reduce our carbon footprint over the last few meetings and the children listed all the things we have spoken about previously to do with this e.g: - reduce shower length, walk when we can instead of driving, turning lights off, reducing screen time and recycling.
Miss Kershaw then introduced the new term of ‘biodiversity’ to the children which is one of the 10 topics within the Eco school’s website. We looked at this term in more depth on the Eco school’s website to understand what it means : ‘focusing on increasing the levels of plant, insect, and animal life across your site. Strive to make your school grounds a haven for wildlife, whether that’s through wildlife-friendly planting, creation of bug hotels and other habitats, or installing new facilities like hedgehog highways and bird feeders!’
We then looked at lots of ideas and photographs that other schools have implemented to boost biodiversity and then used these to collate our own actions moving forward. The children came up with the following:
-
Create hedgehog houses
-
Make bird food rings to hang in trees
-
Make decorate birdhouses
-
Make bug/insect hotels using natural materials from outside
-
Plant wildlife friendly plants

In our Eco committee meeting, Miss Kershaw introduced the new campaign of ‘The Great Big School Clean’ launched by the Eco school’s website in support of keeping Britain tidy. This is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign which has returned for Spring 2025. The children learnt that this campaign is a fantastic opportunity for students to become active citizens, taking ownership over their local community and changing it for the better. We discussed the fact that no one is too small to make a big difference and if we all come together, that big difference becomes huge.
We spoke about how we can make a pledge for the Great Big School Clean 2025 which opens in February. We will then receive a digital pack of resources for teachers which contains: A ‘How to’ litter pick guide for schools, litter Bingo and thank you certificates for your #LitterHeroes.
We generated some ideas of how we could get involved and how we can keep our school community clean in support of this launch. Some ideas were:
-
An Eco committee litter pick (schools or local community)
-
Class litter picks
-
Some children wanted to pair up with a younger child to do litter picks in the community.
-
Eco monitors at play time to ensure fruit wasn’t going on the floor and the playground/school is clean.
